A celebration for the 110th anniversary of Shandong University, one of China`s top ten universities was held on its central campus on October 15.

Many of the nation`s official leaders congratulated the university, including Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and chairman of the Standing Committee of China`s National People`s Congress Wu Bangguo.

"With a unique campus culture, Shandong University`s academic standards and education competitiveness are continuously approving, aiming to rank among the world`s top 100 universities in 10 years," said Xu Xianming, head of the university.

The 110th Anniversary is a milestone for Shandong University. The university will seize the opportunity to achieve all-round development while preserving its fine educational legacies, and to speed up its process of becoming a world-class university, according to Xu.

Many academic and cultural activities have been held in October, including a summit for presidents of worldwide leading medical colleges, an engineering seminar participated by representatives from Japan, the ROK and China, and a calligraphy exhibition.

Shandong University was built in the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) in 1901. It is one of China`s key comprehensive universities. It offers a full range of subjects and has strong scientific research records.

It has enrolled more than 400,000 talents and scholars for the nation, including famous Chinese fmous writers – Wen Yiduo, Lao She and Shen Congwen, the historian Gu Jiegang, as well as Ji Xianlin who is an expert on Chinese studies.
