China's city to boost fame with Asian Beach Games

China`s unknown coastal city Haiyang in Shandong province hoped to boost its fame with hosting the next Asian Beach Games, the city`s vice mayor said on the sidelines of the ongoing second Asian Beach Games in Oman.

"It will be a big honor for Haiyang as a host city of Asian Beach Games which is previously hosted by the internationally famous Bali of Indonesia and Muscat, the capital of Oman," said Gao Jingtao, vice mayor of Haiyang city. "it will be a big promotion for us."

Gao added that "not only will the Games promote the city`s fame and eco-friendly economy, but also boost the idea of happy sports. "

"Share the joy, as the Beach Games`s slogan says, medals in the Beach Games are not so important as the Asian Games, but the pleasure that sports and the nature bring to us."

Situated in east China`s Shandong province, Haiyang is a coastal city with a 230km coast paved with golden sand off the Yellow Sea. Gao said that the city has the clean environment for the eco-friendly beach games, and the weather during the Games will be around 21 degree centigrade, the best temperature for sports.

Haiyang gained the bid for the 2012 third Asian Beach Games during the 2006 Doha Asian Games and it has been decided the Beach Games will be held between June 16 to 22.

Gao said that besides the fine weather and environment, they also have a professional operation team for the Games. Learned from Bali and Muscat, Gao said they are considering hiring international professional teams for the operation of the Games.

The city has been doing a lot of promotion efforts during around the world. Both of Sheikh Ahmed al Fahad al Sabah, Olympic Council Asia chairman, and chairman of the International Olympic Committee Jacques Rogge sign their names on the billboard of Haiyang`s exhibition stand in Muscat.

Chinese artists will put on a 11-minute show on the closing ceremony of the Muscat Asian Beach Games.

But Gao admitted that they are facing some pressure for the Games. "The hosts of the Games are both widely famous in the world, " said Gao.

Gao admitted that compared with Bali and Muscat, Haiyang is facing some pressure in terms of internationalization and infrastructure, but he was still optimistic.

"With the country`s help and our own efforts, I`m sure that the next Asian Beach Games will be successful," said Gao. "and also special."
