Liaocheng University has been authorized to issue master’s and bachelor’s degrees and to provide training courses for people with equivalent education record to apply for master’s degree or for the specialty. LU now has 22 colleges, 73 undergraduate degree programs and 45 master degree programs. The undergraduate degree programs include, but are not limited to, philosophy, economics, law, pedagogy, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, and administration. At present, the enrollment of full-time students totals 26000. Having many modern teaching buildings, lab buildings, libraries, web centers, and gymnasiums, LU covers a total area of over 3000 mu with the building area of 740,000 m2. The total value of laboratory apparatus and equipments is 220 million Yuan. Its libraries possess a collection of books up to 2,330,000 volumes and 100,811GB of electric books and journals. With its picturesque sceneries of lake and evergreen plants, the campus boasts of its elegant environment. LU has been awarded the honorary titles of “Garden-like Unit” and “Civilized Campus” by Shandong Province. The university has a staff of 2150 full-time teachers, of which 220 are professors, 477 associate professors, and 229 with doctorate degrees. Among them, nine teachers have received special government subsidies from the State Council, nine have been awarded the title of national excellent teacher, four acquired the honorary title of excellent teacher of ideological and political work of national colleges and universities, and ten were awarded the excellent teacher prize of normal (teacher) colleges and universities. Additionally, 38 more were assessed as either the top specialized talents at provincial level, the young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions, or the young and middle-aged leading scholars in a branch of learning. Five more have been recognized as renowned teachers, excellent teachers, or excellent educators of Shandong Province. It is noteworthy to conclude that a great number of famous scholars like Ji Xianlin, Zhang Xinshi, and Xue Qunji have been engaged as visiting professors or part-time professors. By focusing on construction-related fields and promoting teaching through scientific research, LU has progressively improved its academic research level. LU now has one appointed professor of “Taishan Scholar” (Analytical Chemistry) entitled by Shandong Province, two provincial key research labs, two key research bases of social sciences planning in Shandong Province, and ten provincial key academic subjects and provincial research centers. In the past five years, LU has obtained 73 national research topics including the National Social Science Fund, the National Natural Science Fund, and 236 provincial / ministerial research topics, of which 91 achievements were awarded. These include “the National Science and Technology Prize Nominated by the Ministry of Education”, “Excellent Achievement Prize in the Humanity Social Science Research of Chinese Universities”, and “Xia Yan Movie Literature Prize”. Taking teaching as the central task, LU continuously reinforces reforms in education and strengthens the administration of teaching by seeking the all-round improvement in students’ moral, intellectual, physical and aesthetic qualities. LU also aims to nurture high-level specialists with solid academic foundations, instilling good qualities and abilities of practice and innovation. The quality of education and teaching in LU has improved steadily. About 21% of full-time graduating students from LU were admitted as postgraduates every year, and in some specialties, the proportion even surpasses 60%. The graduate employment rate at the end of each academic year is over 87%. Two specialties were assessed as “distinctive subjects” of provincial level, and five as provincial high-quality courses. A total of 44 excellent teaching achievements were awarded by the Province or the State, one of which won the first prize of the nation, plus two second prizes, and for the Province there were eight first prizes and 21 second prizes. LU was assessed many times as a national and provincial advanced unit for excellent higher education and moral education. LU actively expands the activities of international communication and cooperation and runs joint schools with domestic and foreign educational institutions. The administrative level of running such schools has also steadily improved. Now LU has established friendly intercollegiate relations and exchange and cooperative relations with more than 100 foreign universities and institutions from over 40 countries and districts such as the U.S., Japan, Canada, Russia, Australia, and South Korea. Over the past 30 years, LU has fully carried out the Party’s and the State’s educational policies. Keeping all of China in view and planting our feet in Shandong, (especially the western part of Shandong), LU actively serves the development of the district elementary education and economic and social progress. Properly dealing with the relations between reform, development and social stability, LU has realized a fast, cooperative and healthy development in scope, structure, quality and benefit. And hence, the LU spirit, “admiring teaching, upholding learning, honest and sincere and brave advance,” has taken shape. At present, the university is enforcing the strategy of “constructing the university by quality, strengthening by talents, and invigorating by specialties” and promoting the comprehensive internal construction. The staff of Liaocheng University are working hard to build the university into a high-leveled provincial comprehensive university with great domestic influence. |
