Four foreigners set up a table in their Metro carriage on Friday to enjoy food and drinks — but other passengers were not amused at their antics.

The incident took place on Line 11 that connects to the Shanghai International Circuit, where Sunday's Formula One race took place. A photo was posted on Weibo showing the unidentified foreigners eating and appearing to drink white wine. The picture triggered criticism on social media.

"Where are your manners," said one outraged online user.

The Metro operator condemned the foreigners' behavior as impolite and said commuters were urged not to eat on trains but there were no regulations against doing so. However, the Metro operator said if their table had blocked the movement of commuters or injured others, they could have been fined up to 50 yuan ($7.25).

In a separate incident, a balloon disrupted the Metro during yesterday morning's rush hours.

The city's Metro operator said that the balloon became entangled in the electrical lines of Metro Line 1 around daybreak, causing reduced speed limits during the morning rush hours.

Line 1's section from Hulan Road to Fujin Road stations had speed limits imposed from 6:30am. An hour later, the affected section was expanded to Tonghe Xincun to Fujin Road stations.

The operator said that the balloon was removed at about 8am, when operations began to return to normal.

The incident also caused congestion near stations along the affected section.

The operator said the Mylar balloon was on the elevated section between Gongfu Xincun and Baoan Highway. Any balloon entangled in electricity grid of the Metro network could affect services, the operator added, and they needed to be removed.
