SDU Holds Press Conference of the 22nd International Congress of Historical Sciences

  On the morning of January 21st, a press conference for the 22nd International Congress of Historical Sciences (ICHS) was held at Shandong University (SDU). Marjatta Hietala, President of International Committee of the Historical Science (CISH), Zhang Haipeng, President of Association of Chinese Historians, Robert Frank, Secretary of CISH, and Zhang Rong, President of SDU, attended the Press Congress. Liu Yan, Vice President of SDU, presided over the meeting.

  Enjoys a reputation as “Olympics of Historical Sciences”, the 22nd International Congress of Historical Sciences will be held at Shandong University, Jinan, Shandong Province from 23rd to 29th August, 2015, which is the first time to be held in Asia since the Congress was created in 1900.

  The coming congress will be undertaken by both the Association of Chinese Historians and Shandong University, and includes 82 symposiums, mainly involving four major themes, which are “China from Global Perspectives”, “Historicizing Emotions”, “Revolutions in World History: Comparisons and Connections” and “Digital Turn in History”.

  There will also be a series of academic activities that include 4 theme forums, 27 specialized themed discussions, 18 joint sessions, 19 round tables and so forth. In addition, there are 10 topics for discussion recommended by the Association of Chinese Historians and approved by CISH and the breadth and depth of the topics for discussion greatly surpass the previous conferences. Over two thousand historians from all over the world will gather at SDU to participate in the coming congress. At the suggestion of the Organizing Committee of Shandong University, the Congress also added wall posts and awards activities for young scholars.

  On behalf of CISH, Hietala welcomed all guests who attended the press conference and praise the hard work of the Organizing Committee as well as the rich and informative official conference website.

  She noted that the work of CISH has reflected the present trend towards globalization and many actual topics will be found in the program of the 22nd Congress.

  She stated that the ideal result of such international conferences is to open new forums for the discussion of history, establish new perspectives, and raise the status of history in global world. She also recounted several impressive relationships with Shandong University and explained the logo of the 22nd Congress. In addition, she has used her translation of a poem to explain her view on history.

  Zhang Haipeng believes the coming congress will be beneficial for Chinese historians to exchange ideas with internationally renowned historians and has a positive effect on enhancing the relationship between Association of Chinese Historians and CISH.

  Zhang Rong stated that the success in winning the organizing right of the 22nd CISH is an important reflection of China’s international influence, and a major opportunity to further display Chinese civilization and promote Chinese culture onto the world stage. He also said this will have a positive and far-reaching influence, on displaying the vitality of Chinese civilization and promoting cultural self-confidence, as well as raising China's international image.

  Fang Hui, Secretary of 22nd ICHS Organizing Committee of SDU and Dean of School of History and Culture of SDU, said that over the last two years, the SDU Organizing Committee has successfully completed preparation of the Congress, the official web page and the logo for the upcoming congress, and wrote The International Congresses of Historical Sciences: A Brief History and China and the International Congress of Historical Sciences.
