16 returning overseas migrants diagnosed with HIV

(ECNS) -- Hundreds of Chinese who have worked overseas return with STDs such as HIV and syphilis due to sexual misconduct, according to research in east China's Jiangsu province.

In April, the local Inspection and Quarantine office diagnosed 16 cases of HIV and 244 of syphilis among returnees, respectively.

Tests were conducted in nine divisional bureaus including Nantong, Taizhou and Lianyungang and all virus carriers were male.

One overseas worker's wife also tested positive for HIV, after being offered a free check by the Lianyungang bureau, making it the first case in Jiangsu that both husband and wife were detected HIV positive.

Overseas workers remain a high-risk population for STDs and are encouraged to educate themselves as to such risks before going abroad, according to an official from the office.

Such migrants are also advised to consider their sexual conduct and family responsibilities, it was added.

Upon return, workers should voluntarily report to local inspection and quarantine offices to prevent the potential spread of STDs.
