Benfica beats Adelaide United 2-0 in youth soccer tourney

Portuguese side Benfica crushed Adelaide United FC from Australia 2-0 in the opening match of the Weifang Cup youth soccer tournament in Weifang of Eastern China`s Shandong province on Sunday.

Benfica opened the account through Diego Lopes 30 minutes into action and Ivan Cavaleiro then sealed the 2-0 win.

The Australians, looking jaded in hot weather in Weifang, had their chances, but failed to concert them into goals.

Greg Griffin, chairman of Aadelaide United FC, said his side played well in the second half.

Benfica coach Joan Sontas was satisfied. "The first victory is very important. We scored twice in the first half, and we slowed down in the second half for the boys are not very used to the weather," he said.

The 2011 Weifang Cup kicked off Sunday and will conclude on August 6. Eight teams from seven countries and regions will run for the title.
