Senior official watches Chinese opera gala

>BEIJING, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin on Wednesday watched traditional Chinese opera performances presented by artists from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.

Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People`s Political Consultative Conference, saw the show featuring traditional Chinese operas, including Peking Opera, Kunqu Opera and Cantonese Opera.

The event was sponsored by a forum on the development of traditional Chinese opera arts held in Beijing. The forum has also opened in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.

Jia, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, called for more economic and cultural exchanges between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan last week.
