Taishan registers record number of tourists

Taishan Mountain welcomed 3.96 million tourists last year, up 11.68 percent compared with 2009, representing a record high for the fifth consecutive year.

Nearly 2.4 million tourists took the cable car to the mountain, an increase of 9.6 percent, leading to 178 million yuan ($26.9 million) revenue.

With an investment of 260 million yuan, large-scale performances were put on in the evenings last year, offering visitors night time entertainment. The show brought 28.8 million yuan from May to October last year.

Tourist centers have been built, integrating information points, parking lots and restaurants.

A number of new tourism programs have also been developed, highlighting the mountain’s abundant freshwater resources.

High-tech devices were introduced to the area, including digital ticketing, GPS-aided dispatching systems and video monitoring.

A mountain-climbing contest, with total prizes of 1.8 million yuan, attracted more than 7,000 participants. Many other influential cultural events were also held in Taishan, including a coming of age ceremony recorded by Hunan TV.

Taishan was also one of the stages of the first Tour of China International Road Cycling Race.

As a world-renowned natural and cultural heritage site, Taishan enjoyed a series of infrastructure improvements last year, costing more than 35 million yuan, including an 11,000 square-meter wide parking lot.
