Founded in 1956 and located in the cradle of Ancient Qi Culture-Zibo City of Shandong Province, Shandong University of Technology (hereafter referred to as SDUT) is, under the leadership of the People’s Government of Shandong Province, a provincially prioritized university with a focus on science and engineering.

Ever since its founding over 50 years ago, in light of the motto “integrity，learning，commitment and perfection” and in the spirit of “selfless dedication and striving for excellence”, the university has cultivated great numbers of high-level professionals for the society. Presently, SDUT offers 63 undergraduate programs and 43 master’s degree conferring programs. They cover eight fields of learning, such as engineering, science, economics, management, literature, law, history and pedagogy, forming a layout emphasizing engineering, and ensuring coordinated development of all the specialties. The university boasts 21 schools, with a total enrollment of over 32,000 full-time undergraduate and associate degree students, and 1,200 postgraduates. The university is among the first group of National Prioritized Training Bases for Vocational Education Teachers named by the Ministry of Education and one of the Model Colleges of Enterprise Education in Shandong Province. It also holds the name of Shandong Provincial Research Center of College Students’ Cultural Qualities Education. In 2007, the university became the National Experiment Zone for Talent Cultivation Pattern Innovation and passed the Evaluation of Undergraduate Teaching by the Ministry of Education with an excellent score. In 2009, the university became eligible to develop the doctorate conferring programs.

The university has strong operating capability and complete education facilities. Sticking to the principle of “high starting point, superb quality and good taste”, and in accordance with the construction objectives of being “ecological, garden-like, digital and humanized”, the university has put in great investment to seek continuous improvement of the education conditions. The university covers an area of 2.4 million square meters. The quiet surroundings, flourishing trees and flowers and the green carpet of grass create a pleasant scenery, presenting the beauty of harmony between human and nature. With a floor space of 1.29 million square meters, the university has a total sports area of 175,700 square meters, 208 multi-media lecture halls and complete teaching facilities for physical education. The library contains a collection of 4.65 million volumes of books (of which 2.1 million volumes are electronic) and 26,971 types of journals in both Chinese and foreign languages. The total value of instruments and equipment for teaching and research reaches 294 million Yuan RMB. There are 16 laboratories jointly developed by the central and the local governments, two Shandong Provincial Model Centers for Experiment Teaching and six Shandong Provincial Experiment Teaching Centers for Mainstay Disciplines. The advanced campus network links the whole campus and there are public service platforms such as Education Technology Center and Analysis and Test Center.

In conformity with the faculty building guideline of “gathering talents, cultivating teams and producing masters”, the university makes simultaneous efforts to attract high-quality personnel and train its own faculty to form a high-level, devoted talent team with a reasonable structure. Currently, among 1,720 members of the faculty, there are 214 professors and 560 associate professors. Of these, 286 have doctorates and 1,032 have master’s degrees. One faculty member holds the honor of State Young and Middle-aged Experts of Outstanding Contributions, four are candidates of the National New Century 100, 1000 and 10,000 Talents Project and one is a member of the Discipline Appraisal Panels of Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council. Also, there are 12 recipients of the State Council Special Allowance and one candidate of the Excellent Talent Support Program of the Ministry of Education. Eighteen professors are respectively granted with the title of “Mount Tai Scholar” Distinguished Professor, Young and Middle-Aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions in Shandong Province, or Teaching Masters of Shandong Province. Sixteen are doctoral supervisors. Also, the university has recruited five academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a group of adjunct professors.

Regarding teaching as the center, SDUT advocates the teaching spirit of “serving as role models and teaching with tireless zeal” and the learning spirit of “excelling in both character and knowledge and learning tirelessly”. Deepening the credit reform, the university has established a three-in-one talent cultivation system stressing “knowledge, capability and quality” to ensure the cultivation of high-level professionals with a solid foundation, excellent competence, high quality and innovative spirits. Comprehensive teaching reform has also been undertaken and the building of disciplines, courses and teaching teams have been enhanced. Since 2003, the university has been awarded 32 teaching achievement prizes of provincial level and above, among which two are second prizes of national level. One team is chosen as the national level teaching team and four as provincial level teaching teams. Four disciplines are selected as the national level programs with special features, and eight as provincial level brand-name programs or provincial level programs with special features. Three courses are national level quality courses, one course is a national level bilingual model course and 17courses are provincial level quality courses. Twenty-five textbooks are among the official textbooks of the State “11th Five-year” Plan. SDUT has become one of the pilot universities for National Teaching Reform of College Foreign Language and one of the Training Bases for National College Student KAB Enterprise Education. By implementing the research and innovation training plan for college students, the practical and innovative abilities of the students have been improved. This has led to the winning of almost 600 prizes in various kinds of important events, such as the "Challenge Cup" National University Student Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Work Competition, the College Student Business Plan Competition, the China Robot Contest, the National Contest of Maths Models, Electronic Design Competition etc. With employment rate and quality of the graduates keeping at a relatively high level, the university has been granted the award of Advanced Collectives for Graduate Employment among Regular Institutions of Higher Education in Shandong Province. Postgraduate education innovation has been strengthened to cultivate the postgraduates’ innovative ability. The university has been named in the first group of Advanced Unit for Postgraduate Education Management and Discipline Building of Shandong Province.

Adhering to the scientific research guideline of “more academic achievements, more talents and more benefits”, the university has integrated its scientific research power, established academic teams, decided on main directions and stressed both fundamental and applied research to actively serve the local economic and social development. Now, the university has one national level engineering research center, one provincial research institute of engineering and technology, 12 provincial research centers of engineering and technology, seven key provincial disciplines, three key provincial laboratories and three provincial research bases of social science, all of which actively participate in building a strong Shandong Province of manufacturing industry. The university has also jointly set up over 20 R&D entities with enterprises and research institutes and turned to be one of the major scientific research and technological innovation bases in Shandong Province. Starting from the “10th Five-year” Plan, the university has taken up 1,710 research projects of various types, among which 18 are part of the State “863” Plan, State “973” Plan, or National Science and Technology Supporting Plan. Of these, 62 are national level programs of National Natural Science Fund or National Social Science Fund. About 700 scientific research awards of different levels and classes have been received, among which 10 awards are at national level. In both 2006 and 2007, one second prize of National Award for Technological Invention was received. In both 2008 and 2009, SDUT also received one National Second Prize for Progress in Science and Technology.

SDUT sticks to the principle of opening to the outside world and enhances international exchange and cooperation. It has established friendly and cooperative relationship with over 40 institutions of higher education in the U.S.A., UK, ROK, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, etc. Exchange and cooperation agreements have been reached with them. The university explores the channels of cooperation with overseas partners to push forward the process of internationalization and has launched nine joint education programs with institutions of several nations. The university also attaches great importance to the recruitment of overseas talents. By inviting high-level foreign experts and scholars to assume teaching positions and to give lectures, the education quality has been greatly elevated. SDUT strives to develop international education and 1,061 international students have studied in our university.

Facing new development situations and opportunities of higher education and taking talent cultivation as a fundamental task, SDUT will continue to keep discipline building as the leading role, elevation of quality as the core, scientific research as the focal point and faculty and staff building as the key. It will fully carry out the strategy of “quality supports us, scientific research strengthens us, talents enrich us, characteristics distinguish us and opening-up energizes us” to promote intension and to form features. By emancipating the mind, opening to the outside world, innovating systems and following scientific development, every member of SDUT is making great efforts to turn SDUT into a well-known teaching-research university in China.
