Yantai

Geographic Position   

Yantai, located on the east tip of Shandong Peninsular (36°16′—38°23N, 119°34′—121°67′E), bordering on the Yellow Sea and the Bohai Bay, lies to Japan and Korea across the sea. It is one of the 14 coastal cities opening up to the outside world, and plays an important role among the cities along the Bohai Bay economic circle, where the state gives priority to its development. Geographically, Yantai is on hilly land except for the central area, which is mountainous. The plains scattered along the coast covering 23% of its total area. It is crisscrossed by 7 river systems, each with a drainage area of over 300 square kilometers; Yantai has a temperate climate with mild winters and moderate summers. The annual average temperature is about 12 degrees centigrade and the average annual rainfall is about 622 millimeters. Over 200 frost-free days can be expected in a year. History & Culture   

Yantai has a long history, and it was called Zhifu in the ancient times. In 200 B.C. the first emperor of China once shot fish here with bows drawn and arrows set, forming afterwards “the fish shooting platform”.For fighting against the sea rovers, the Ming Dynasty set up the beacon fire stand in the y ear of 1398 and Chinese “Yantai” hereby achieved her nomenclature. And Yantai became one of the first ports that opened up to the outside in 1861. In 1958, Yantai district was set up. In 1983, Yantai City was set up. In 1984, the State council approved Yantai as one of first14 coastal cities in China open to the outside world. About 17 countries setup their consulates in Yantai from 1862 to 1930. Meanwhile, banks, churches, schools, and even the first post office in China were set up to serve the increasing foreign institutions. Now most of the relics are preserved and renovated and are open to public. 

Administrative Divisions   

Under Yantai’s jurisdiction there are 4 districts, 1 county, 7 county level cities and 1 national level economic & technology development area, 1 national level export processing zone. The total area of the city & regions is 13746 km2 (including urban area of 2722 km2), with a total population of 6.51 million (including 1.8 million living in the city).

Economic Situation   

In 2007, the GDP of Yantai is 288 billion Yuan, ranked No. 2 among the same level cities in Shandong Province, with an increase of 17%.

Industry Strength

Yantai, as the second most important industrial region in Shandong Province, is a favorable industry base with four pillar industries, which are machinery, electronics, foodstuff and gold processing. Based on these four pillar industries six main product clusters have been formed: automobiles and auto-parts, shipyard and shipbuilding, computer, mobiles, wine and jewelry. Yantai has more than 5000 medium and large industrial enterprises. In the year of 2007, Yantai completed the industrial added value of 160.7 billion RMB.

There are 3000 machinery manufacturing companies, involved in automobile, automotive parts, ship building, building machinery, engineering machinery, refrigerating equipment, internal-combustion engine and parts, etc. The automobile production includes car, bus, heavy-loaded truck, trailer, tanker truck, container truck, sweeping machine, etc. Companies such as Shanghai-GM Dongyue Automobile, which is the second car production plant of Shanghai-GM and also the biggest car producer of Shandong province with designed annual capacity of 600,000 cars, Shanghai-GM Dongyue Power Assembly Ltd., producing 600,000 engines and gear boxes per year, respectively, Yantai Shuchi Bus Ltd., producing ordinary and top-grade buses, with a designed capacity of 3000 buses per year. There are more than 300 companies involved in electronics industry, the comprehensive economic strength in this field ranks No. 2 in Shandong Province. About 180 companies are involved in textile industry, producing special chemical fibers, yarn, cotton fabrics, towel and different type of garments. In the field of foodstuff, there are 15 categories covering vegetables, fruits, meat, aquatics, oil and cereal processing, wine, beverages, etc. All together 1500 companies are engaged in.

Agriculture Strength

Yantai has a vast rural hinterland and the area of under cultivation exceeds 450,000 hectares. The total agricultural machinery power is 5.949 million kilowatts. Farming level in Yantai has reached a high position, and main agriculture products include grain, fruit, vegetable, animal husbandry and aquatic products. Enterprises engaged in the processing of agricultural products are more than 1500. In 2007, the total quantity of the aquatic products was 2.05 million tons. The fruit quantity was 3.96 million tons, while the vegetable quantity was 2.73 million tons, meanwhile the vegetable export quantity ranks No.1 in Shandong province.

Tourism Strength

Yantai is situated at the foot of the hill and along the sea, enjoying beautiful scenery. It is not only a model city for tourism and a well-known summer resort in China, but also the cradle of exquisite Lu Cuisine. There are many interesting places including natural sightseeing and historic sites such as the fairyland on the earth- Penglai Pavilion, the fairyland on the sea- Changdao Island, the gem of Chinese calligraphy -the stone Tablet Inscriptions of the North Wei Dynasty (386-532) on Mt. wenfen, the relics of Daoism- Kunyu Mountain as well as Mu Mansion and the relics of King Qin for east cruising…Moreover, Yantai Region is dotted with spring and wide forest. Yantai has four international golf yards and four province-level holiday resorts, which makes Yantai the best place for touring and leisurely stays.
